FLASH FLASH (Flying Laser Self-Defence System Against Infrared Seeker Head Missiles) is a protection system for military and civil aircraft against approaching guided missiles with IR seekers. It operates in conjunction with a missile approach warning receiver and consists of the following components: IR passive tracker, laser fine tracker and destructive laser which blinds or destroys the approaching missile's seeker using high-energy pulses. The entire operation takes place within only a very short time and at a safe distance from the object to be protected. With two to three FLASH systems, the complete airspace around an aircraft can be protected. After successful completion of the demonstrator program and the risk-minimization studies in 2006, development of the operational system in cooperation with EADS will be started in 2007. From 2012, the first FLASH systems are planned to be installed in the A400M aircraft.

Candidates for next generation armoured vehicles unveiled PRNewswire-GNN London 31 July London, 31 July /PRNewswire-GNN/ -- MINISTRY OF DEFENCE News Release (193/2007) issued by The Government News Network on 31 July 2007 The contenders in the latest stage of the Army's programme for a new force of battlefield armoured vehicles - the Future Rapid Effect System (FRES) - were unveiled by Minister of State for Defence Equipment and Support Lord Drayson today. Boxer, Piranha and VBCI were put through their paces at the Bovington training area as part of trials for a FRES Utility Vehicle Variant. The winning design will be developed further to meet the Army's future needs. Defence Minister Lord Drayson said: "These trials are a significant step forward in a vital programme which is at the centre of the future of the British Army. I made clear in February that MOD intended to take forward the FRES programme at pace. Today's event is tangible evidence of that commitment being put into practice, and I look forward to announcing the winners of both the trials and the System of Systems Integrator competition in November." The Utility Vehicle design competition is a key element of the FRES acquisition strategy announced last November. Notes to editors 1. The FRES programme will equip the UK Armed Forces with over 3,000 new medium weight armoured vehicles. This includes reconnaissance, direct fire, and manoeuvre support vehicles. They will provide high levels of protection and will be air-transportable, allowing troops to deploy rapidly around the globe. 2. The Army's FRES requirement continues to be informed by operational experience, where the threats to our forces are constantly evolving. This operational experience means that FRES specifications will be matched as closely as possible to the needs of our troops both today and in the future. 3. The candidate vehicles are the Boxer, produced by the Dutch-German ARTEC consortium; Piranha, a Mowag design presented by General Dynamics UK and the VBCI design, produced by French company Nexter. 4. The trials have involved the candidate vehicles being evaluated by technical experts and soldiers. 5. For further information please contact Clare Keen at MOD Press Office 020 7218 2165 or Lisa Murphy on 07810 237923.

BOXER shortlisted for FRES Krauss-Maffei Wegmann highly welcomes the decision of the British Ministry of Defence to shortlist the BOXER for the trials of truth of the FRES program and is convinced to fulfil with this extraordinary vehicle the requirements of the British Armed Forces to their full convenience. In a press release issued on 07 June 2007 the British MoD announced that it "has selected the vehicles that will participate in trials for the utility variant of the Army’s Future Rapid Effects System (FRES) later this summer. The selected designs are BOXER (ARTEC), Piranha (GD UK) and VBCI (Nexter). The outcome of the trials will be announced by the end of November when one or more utility vehicle design will go forward for detailed assessment. The FRES family of vehicles is vital for the Army of the future. They will high levels of protection and will also be air-transportable, allowing troops to deploy rapidly across the globe at short notice. Defence Minister Lord Drayson said: “My highest priority is to ensure that our Forces have the equipment they need to achieve success on operations today, tomorrow and in the future. FRES has a vital part to play in the future of the British Army. I signalled my commitment to the FRES programme last year and this announcement provides tangible evidence of progress. The selection of these designs for inclusion in the utility vehicle trials is a part of the competitive acquisition strategy developed to ensure that we deliver the best solution for the Army.” General Sir Richard Dannatt, Chief of the General Staff, said: “FRES is my highest equipment priority and I am determined that we will make this programme a timely success – it is at the heart of the future Army. I am therefore very encouraged by the significant progress that has been made in identifying the three best candidate vehicles for us to trial this summer and I look forward to maintaining this momentum in the programme to the next decision point by November this year. We need to take this exciting project forward, together with our industrial partners as soon as possible.” In addition to the utility vehicle design competition, the Ministry of Defence is also running competitions to select a company which will work with the designer to integrate key systems onto the vehicles, and a company that will have strategic oversight of the entire FRES programme and its links to the existing fleet, known as the system of systems integrator. In a clear sign of the MoD’s commitment to drive the FRES programme forward, contracts for this work will be awarded within 12 months. The FRES programme will equip the Army with a range of new vehicle types over and above the utility variant. This includes reconnaissance, direct fire, and engineer support vehicles. These will also be open to competition from industry."

IRIS-T SL / IRIS-T SLS The IRIS-T SL (surface launched) system is based on the concept of the IRIS-T air-to-air missile and complies with the German Air Force's new requirements for a secondary missile for ground-based, medium-range air defence within the trilateral MEADS program. Such requirements concern, for instance, high efficiency against a wide range of targets, high agility, short reaction time through vertical launch, target data synchronization via radio data link and easy logistics through storage, transportation and firing of the missile in the launch canister. Compared to IRIS-T, IRIS-T SL is equipped with a larger solid-propellant rocket motor, a data link and a nose cone for drag reduction. Via standardized plug & fight data interface, the IRIS-T SL system can be integrated into existing and future, networked air defence command and control systems. Compact carrier vehicles provide high off-road mobility and easy air transport in the A400M Airbus. IRIS-T SL is being developed within the TLVS/MEADS program and is planned to be in service from 2012. While IRIS-T SL is a medium-range air defence system, IRIS-T SLS is a true short-range air defence system using the IRIS-T air-to-air missile without any changes. This is fired by means of an LAU-7 standard aircraft launcher, four of which are mounted onto an all-terrain launch vehicle.
