AUSA 2012: Textron Marine & Land Systems Exhibiting its High End Vehicles

For the first time in the US, Textron Marine & Land Systems (TMLS) is displaying the Tactical Armored Patrol Vehicle (TAPV) that won the Canadian competition for 500+ vehicles in June 2012.

Shown alongside TMLS’ newly named COMMANDO family of vehicles at AUSA booth #7643, visitors are able to see the striking differences between the newly engineered TAPV, part of TMLS' COMMANDO ELITE series of vehicles, and the tried and true M1117 Armored Security Vehicle (ASV), which is part of the COMMANDO Advanced line. Visitors are also able to see two variants of TMLS' COMMANDO SELECT vehicles, which are being built for the Afghanistan National Army and fielded as the Mobile Strike Force Vehicle.  Further, TMLS will again have their vehicle for the MECV programme on hand as that competition heats back up.

TMLS is seeing strong interest in its vehicles, including several contracts this year; and continues to grow its end-to-end vehicle fielding, training, maintenance and logistics support.

WASHINGTON/AUSA Annual Meeting and Exposition - October 22, 2012 - Textron Marine & Land Systems, an operating unit of Textron Systems, a Textron Inc. Rigorously tested and proven in the toughest environments, the COMMANDO family of vehicles offers a range of protection up to and exceeding MRAP level, unmatched on-road/off-road mobility and ample firepower. TM&LS offers three lines of COMMANDO four-wheeled armored vehicles - COMMANDO Advanced, COMMANDO Select and COMMANDO Elite.

COMMANDO Advanced armored vehicles are combat proven over 10 years, and are derived from Armored Security Vehicles used by the U.S. Army and other militaries in locations including Afghanistan, Iraq and Colombia. All COMMANDO Advanced armored vehicle variants offer excellent on-road and off-road mobility enabling them to operate in urban, jungle, desert and mountainous terrain. Crew protection is reinforced with a V-shaped hull bottom and 360-degree protection from direct fire.

COMMANDO Select armored personnel carriers include variants that can carry up to 10 occupants, and offer an enhanced combination of lethality, survivability, mobility and sustainability. MRAP-level 1 crew protection is built into all COMMANDO Select vehicles. Greater survivability, however, doesn't come at the expense of mobility. These vehicles deliver greater mobility than other similar MRAP-type armored vehicles on the market. More than 440 COMMANDO Select vehicles are currently being built and fielded, under the name Mobile Strike Force Vehicles, for the Afghanistan National Army.

The COMMANDO Elite line features TM&LS' most highly-protected and capable armored vehicles. These vehicles feature a digital backbone, provide MRAP-level 2 mine-blast protection, and deliver lethality through multiple sensors and weapons options. COMMANDO Elite vehicles come equipped with drive train enhancements that make them fast and highly maneuverable in a wide range of environments. The Canadian Forces earlier this year contracted for 500 of these vehicles for its Tactical Armored Patrol Vehicle program. A British company is using the AUSA 2012 convention to display its new 'route-clearance' vehicle concept.

The Pearson Engineering Route Opening and Clearing Capability (PEROCC) is a large four-wheeled engineering vehicle designed to be fitted with a range of route-clearing equipment including rollers and and a powerful articulated arm which can be used to investigate suspicious objects.

Operated by a crew of three, a driver, gunner and commander, the concept vehicle is designed to address what Pearson considered to be weaknesses in current route-clearing methods. Pearson already builds rollers for mine and IED clearance, but such devices are then attached to vehicles that are unable to deliver the ground pressures required to defeat some of the most destructive mines.

'PEROCC can put down twice amount of ground pressure compared to other route proving vehicles, this means it can defeat the Soviet-made TM-62 family of mines,' said Ian Kelley, sales and marketing manager at Pearson Engineering. While not prolific, the mine is one of the most challenging to defeat because of the high pressures required to set it off.

The PEROCC vehicle has been designed to operate under a high tempo of operations and key components have been designed to be frangible and quickly replaced. If one of the wheels is blown off, the vehicle can recover itself and be quickly repaired. Videos being displayed at AUSA show components such as the claw subjected to explosions, but because of the frangible design, only the claw is damaged allowing engineers to install another claw onto the undamaged and still serviceable arm.

PEROCC includes what Pearson calls 'Blast-Off Wheels'. In the event of a blast under one of the vehicle wheels it will readily detach from the axle, thus reducing the transfer of blast energy into the vehicle, reducing harmful acceleration effects on the crew and enabling rapid replacement or repair.

A variety of tools are interchangeable from under armour are available including a ripper claw, bucket, grapple and ground penetrating radar array. These are stowed on what the company calls a pivot steer loader at the rear of the vehicle.

The three-seat crew compartment is protected from beneath by an armoured double V-shaped hull for blast deflection. The upper hull is protected by applique composite armour panels which provide blast and ballistic protection.
