Philippe Top-Force
South Korea, the United States and Japan on Sunday agreed to jointly develop a new civilian helicopter largely aimed at the growing Chinese market, Korea Aerospace Industries said in a statement. KAI, South Korea's sole aircraft maker, was teaming up with US-based Bell Helicopter Textron to build the new nine-seater while Japanese trading company Mitsui was an investor in the deal signed at a US rotorcraft industry fair, it said. The three planned to make 350 of the new model helicopter -- named "429" for its four rotor blades, double engines and nine seats -- in the next 10 years after its development by 2007, it said. "The business prospect is bright given the growing demand at home and particularly in China where more civilian-use helicopters will likely be needed before and after the 2008 Beijing Olympics," it said. KAI said it would build all of the helicopter fuselages while having exclusive rights to market the new "429" models in South Korea and China under the deal. KAI said the latest contract would add some 30 billion won (29 million dollars) a year to its revenue. KAI was launched in 1999 after the aerospace affiliates of South Korea's three business conglomerates -- Samsung, Daewoo and Hyundai -- merged under the government-led industry restructuring.
