Thailand Commissions Gripen-based Air Defense

Thailand Declares Its Gripen Integrated Air Defense System Commissioned

 

Just five and a half years after the signing ceremony in Stockholm February 2008, the undertaking by Sweden to provide the Royal Thai Air Force with 12 Gripen C/D aircraft, two SAAB 340 AEWs, radar and other systems, training and on-site support in a project called Peace Suvarnabhumi nears completion.

 

Despite the technological and logistic complexity, geographical distance and time difference, this project has run on time thanks to dedicated stakeholders and skilled staff in both countries. It is the first large defense project by Sweden in Asia.

 

The latest stamp of approval of this bilateral success came 11 September as the Royal Thai Air Force declared the Gripen Integrated Air Defense System commissioned as a fully operational part of the air force at its home base, Wing 7 in Surat Thani.

 

General Thanasak Patimaprakorn, Supreme Commander of the Royal Thai Armed Forces, officiated over the ceremony along with RTAF Commander ACM Prajin Juntong and high ranking representatives from the Royal Thai Army and the Royal Thai Navy, watched by Thai and Swedish guests.

China offers Thailand collaboration on missiles, armoured vehicles

Chinese defence companies are offering Thailand partnership status on a range of military platforms on show at the Defense & Security 2013 exhibition in Bangkok.

 

Officials from state-owed Poly Technologies and the China National Precision Machinery Import & Export Corporation (CPMIEC) told IHS Jane's that the two companies are engaged in preliminary discussions with Thai defence authorities over potential collaboration on several land- and sea-based military systems.

 

These include CPMIEC's HQ-9 surface-to-air missile system - known as FD-2000 in its export configuration - which was selected in October by Turkey to meet that country's T-Loramids air defence requirement. Other equipment comprises the FL-3000N ship-based surface-to-air missile system and the FK-1000 mobile air defence system, both marketed by CPMIEC, as well as Poly Technologies' mine-resistant, ambush-protected CS-VP3 vehicle.

 

"We have an opportunity in Thailand and Southeast Asia to expand our exports," said a CPMIEC official who did not want to be identified. "Thailand has expressed interest in not only our FD-2000 air defence system but also sea-based systems [such as the FK-1000]. We are very happy to transfer full technologies to Thailand to help with local production."

 

With regards to the CS-VP3, Poly Technologies' Zi Dongfang, the director of the group's Southeast Asia department, said: "Thailand has a requirement, particularly in the south of the country, for MRAP vehicles and if selected by Thailand, we would like to offer co-production of the CS-VP3." He added that the CS-VP3 entered production in 2012 and has secured export orders from two unnamed African countries. The People's Liberation Army is expected to place an order for the vehicle soon, he said.

 

Thailand and China are already co-operating on the development and production in Thailand of the DTi-1, a multiple-launch rocket system (MRL) based on China's WS-1 302 mm MRL system. This collaboration programme commenced in 2008 and expanded in 2012 with an agreement to undertake joint development of a guided MRL system based on the same platform.

 

COMMENT

China's moves to expand defence industrial collaboration with Thailand mirrors its strategy in neighbouring countries. This focus is driven not only by a requirement to boost revenues through exports but also Beijing's strategy to increase its strategic influence throughout the region.

 

There is also evidence to suggest that the approach is increasing in intensity. In October, for instance, Malaysia and China signed an accord to explore areas of co-operation based on what is likely to be Kuala Lumpur's continuing interest in Chinese missile systems. Malaysia has previously expressed an interest in acquiring from China technologies to license-manufacture armoured vehicles and light weapons.

 

Additionally, in August Indonesia and China discussed production in Indonesia of the Chinese-designed C-705 surface-to-surface missiles. Such a programme is understood by IHS Jane's to be close to conclusion and would augment Indonesian industry's continuing licensed production of Chinese C-802 anti-ship missiles.

Je crois que Bangkok pourrait trouver une mane plus interessante pour les MRAPs, avec tous ceux que l'US army doit rapatrier d'Irak et d'Afghanistan, juste en payant le transport... a moins qu'il soit aussi question de developper l'industrie dans ce secteur localement.

La Thaïlande cherche un remplaçant au L-39 !

La Thaïlande exploite 36 L-39ZA/ART qui ont été commandés en mars 1992 pour remplacer en priorité les Lockheed T-33/RT-33. Le premier appareil a été officiellement livré le 15 octobre 1993.

Les L-39ZA ont permis le rééquipement des escadrons N° 101 et 102 basé à  Korat et le 401 basé à Takhli. 4 appareils supplémentaires ont été commandés en 1996.
