RBE2 radar
The RBE2 is the world’s first multi-function electronic scanning radar designed and produced for a combat aircraft. Electronic scanning means the RBE2 offers unique capabilities that conventional radars cannot match in air-to-air and air-to-surface functions. Particularly for interception and combat, two-axis electronic scanning enables simultaneous designation of multiple targets to different air-to-air missiles, while the radar continues searching in other directions totally independent of the tracked targets. At very low altitude, the RBE2 radar computes a wide-area 3D map for simultaneous automatic terrain following and terrain avoidance. It also features a high-resolution air-to-ground mapping mode.
The architecture of the RBE2 is fully adapted to integrate the AESA active antenna, which will give the system new capabilities and considerably enhance its performance, while reducing maintenance costs by increasing its reliability. The RBE2 offers a unique opportunity to capitalise on the know-how acquired through the development of its functions, all of which are based on electronic scanning technologies.
The RBE2 radar thus marks a real break with previous generations of radars and is well ahead of its competitors still using mechanical scanning antennas.
