Israel to supply South Korea with surveillance equipment
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An Israeli firm beat US and French rivals for an 80 million dollar deal to provide surveillance devices for South Korean fighter jets, officials say.
The defense ministry said Israel's El-Op was selected to deliver the optical upgrade to South Korea's ability to monitor the movement of North Korean troops.
"The Israeli firm has been selected to provide related equipment," a ministry official told AFP. He did not say when the ministry would sign a contract.
The Israeli firm beat Raytheon and R.O.I of the United States and Thomson of France, Yonhap news agency said.
The Israeli devices are capable of photographing objects up to 100 kilometers (60 miles) away, it said.
In the past South Korea has favoured defense equipment from the United States, which has kept troops here since the 1950-53 Korean War to deter aggression by North Korea.
In a surprise deal in December, however, South Korea picked Eurocopter as lead partner in a multi billion dollar project to develop multi-purpose military helicopters.
Another Israeli firm, IAI ELTA, is vying with US aircraft giant Boeing for South Korea's 2.06 billion dollar project to introduce four surveillance aircraft.
South Korea, which is still technically at war, has no air surveillance system of its own and depends on US airborne reconnaissance aircraft based at Okinawa in Japan.
