US Navy deploys a laser weapon to the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea The afloat forward staging base (interim) USS Ponce (AFSB(I) 15) transits the Arabian Gulf. Ponce is equipped with the Laser Weapon System (LaWS), a technology demonstrator built by Naval Sea Systems Command from commercial fiber solid-state lasers. The system utilizes combination methods developed at the Naval Research Laboratory to successfully shoot down a target. LaWS (the white assembly visible at the center of the photo) can be directed onto targets from the radar track obtained from an MK 15 Phalanx Close-In Weapon System (seen below the laser assembly) or other targeting source. This capability provides ships with a method to easily defeat small boat threats and aerial targets without using bullets. (U.S. Navy photo by Daniel M. Démission du secrétaire à la Défense Le secrétaire américain à la Défense Chuck Hagel a présenté sa démission à Barack Obama qui l'a acceptée lundi, trois semaines après la défaite du Parti démocrate aux élections de mi-mandat. Le président a lui-même annoncé depuis la Maison-Blanche ce changement d'importance dans son administration pour les deux dernières années de son second mandat. Chuck Hagel, qui n'est jamais parvenu à améliorer ses relations avec le Congrès depuis une audience de confirmation tendue au Sénat en 2013, a pris sa décision après de longues discussions entamées en octobre avec Barack Obama, a précisé un membre de l'administration ayant requis l'anonymat. Brad Williamson, commander of SNMG2, bid farewell to the Turkish navy frigate TCG Kemalreis (F 247) from the the guided-missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55). Leyte Gulf is the flagship for Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2). Kemalreis formally detached from SNMG2 on Nov. 15 following four months of operations.
