Greece starts defence purchase talks with France The Greek government intends for all six ships to be built in Greece with French technical assistance, which however does pose a particularly intriguing problem. The only shipyard in Greece which is currently capable of building frigate-size warships is Hellenic Shipyards in Skaramanga, which however happens to be owned 100% by the German TKMS concern. For Hellenic Shipyards to become responsible for the Greek FREMM programme, it would require for France’s DCNS to be willing and prepared to transfer all their designs, building technologies, costing procedures and so on to their bitter rival TKMS – a very unlikely proposition to say the least. The only way out this conundrum would be for the Greek Government to appoint the other naval shipyard in Greece, Eleuysis Shipyards as the main contractor for the FREMM programme. Eleuysis however cannot currently build ships larger than a corvette, and thus would need to be expanded at a significant cost. Afghanistan : des militaires français donnent leur sang pour la victime d’un attentat Le 21 janvier 2009, au camp de Warehouse 6 militaires français ont donné volontairement leur sang au profit de la victime civile d’un attentat suicide qui a eu lieu à Kaboul le samedi 17 janvier 2009. Cette « opération de sauvetage » pour un afghan dont le pronostic vital était engagé a été déclenchée très rapidement dès son transfert à l’hôpital militaire du camp de Warehouse le mardi 20 janvier. Souffrant d’une perforation du foie et du poumon, il devait être impérativement transfusé avant toute opération. Le Groupement Médico-chirurgical a fait appel aux volontaires déjà répertoriés par les médecins d’unité. Cette procédure rapide a permis de contacter tous les donneurs français compatibles présents sur le camp. 450 millilitres de sang ont été prélevés à chacun des six donneurs. Avant d’être transfusé, le sang est analysé par un biologiste sur place. « Il est tout à fait normal de donner son sang pour une victime d’attentat, cela renforce d’autant plus mon sentiment d’utilité sur ce théâtre » précise un lieutenant, un des six donneurs. Un médecin d’unité ajoute que ce don contribuera très certainement à sauver la victime et rappelle que la générosité d’autres donneurs avait déjà sauvé la vie d’un patient civil lors d’un précédent attentat début novembre 2008. Le Groupement Médio-Chirurgical du camp de Warehouse consacre une partie de son activité à la population afghane grâce à des consultations, des hospitalisations ou des aides médicales à la population. En 2008, plus de 7000 consultations ont été assurées et 630 hospitalisations ont été effectuées. La population civile afghane est la première victime des actes de terrorisme aveugle. "There is no opposition," he said. "Maybe I am naïve, but there is an agreement. I take that agreement at face value." Ranque's remarks at a New Year's press conference sought to play down talk of a threat of removal by Dassault in a putative clash over Thales' strategic direction. Dassault and the French Finance Ministry said Dec. 19 in a joint statement that the purchase by the aircraft company of a 26 percent stake in Thales at 38 euros ($50.46) per share showed their support for the company's policy. "The move also underlines the confidence of the French government and Dassault Aviation in Thales' strategy, which is based on a strong international industrial presence and the development of both civil and military products, guaranteeing its international development," the joint statement said. In a separate shareholders' agreement published Nov. 27 by the AMF, the French government's financial market regulator, Dassault waived a veto over strategic operations. Ranque said of Dassault and Thales that the companies are "extremely complementary," and there are no overlaps except in a small area of flight simulation, where Dassault has a system for training pilots of the Rafale fighter jet, which the company produces for the French military. "Thales is a good investment," Ranque said. "They paid a substantial premium over the market share price; personally, I think Thales is worth much more."
