xav
Boeing Advanced Super Hornet Demonstrates Significant Stealth, Range ImprovementsDuring three weeks of flight testing the Advanced Super Hornet, Boeing and partner Northrop Grumman demonstrated that the fighter can outperform threats for decades to come with improvements that make the jet much harder for radar to detect and give it significantly more combat range.Through 21 flights in St. Louis and Patuxent River, Md., that began Aug. 5, the team tested conformal fuel tanks (CFT), an enclosed weapons pod (EWP), and signature enhancements, each of which can be affordably retrofitted on an existing Block II Super Hornet aircraft or included on a new jet.“We continually insert new capabilities into today’s highly capable, already stealthy Super Hornet, and the Advanced Super Hornet is the next phase of this technology evolution,” said Debbie Rub, Boeing Global Strike vice president and general manager. “Boeing and our industry partners are investing in next-generation capabilities so warfighters have what they need when they need it, and so the customer can acquire it in a cost-effective manner.”Improvements to the aircraft’s radar signature, including the enclosed pod, resulted in a 50 percent reduction compared with the U.S. Navy’s stealth requirement for the current Super Hornet variant. The tests also showed that the CFTs increase the jet’s combat radius by up to 130 nautical miles, for a total combat radius of more than 700 nautical miles.Video at link: http://www.navyrecognition.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1217
hadriel

actyon
Semi-Stealth ‘Advanced Super Hornet’ Completes First Phase of Test Flights The Boeing Company and its F/A-18E/F program partner Northrop Grumman have recently completed the first series of flight-testing an advanced version of the Super Hornet multirole strike fighter. According to Boeing, the tests demonstrated that the fighter could outperform threats for decades to come, with improvements that make the jet much harder for radar to detect and give it significantly more combat range. The first of 21 flight tests began August 5th. The tests were conducted at St Louis and Patuxent River, over a period of 3 weeks. On these flights the team tested the aircraft with non-functional Conformal Fuel tanks (CFT) and an Enclosed Weapons Pod (EWP) models, and signature enhancements, enabling the validation of radar cross-section reduction and comparing the drag count to wind tunnel and simulation models. After validation, functional CFT/EWPs will be able to retrofit on existing Super Hornet Block II aircraft or included on new jets. These flight tests will provide the F/A-18 industry team with valuable data on flying qualities, drag and signature levels. http://defense-update.com/20130830_semi-stealth-advanced-super-hornet-completes-first-phase-of-test-flights.html
actyon
F/A-18F CFT & Weapons Pod mockup in St Louis While it has been known for sometime that Boeing and the USNavy intend to fly a modified F/A-18F Super Hornet equipped with conformal fueltanks (CFTs) and a weapons pod later this summer, some new details areemerging. DSCN0273-v2.jpg When the modified Rhino–as the Super Hornet isaffectionately known–does fly in late August or early September over theNavy’s Atlantic range with the new hardware, those CFTs and weapons pod willnot be functional, says Mike Gibbons, Boeing’s F/A-18 program manager. The ideais to test the aerodynamic qualities of those representative shapes, he says. Chris.

Navy on Thursday canceled a notice about a possible order of up to 36 more Boeing Co F/A-18 fighter jets or EA-18G electronic warfare planes after the posting on a federal procurement website sparked confusion this week. The pre-solicitation notice, which first became public this week, had triggered renewed questions about the Navy's commitment to the $392 billion radar-evading F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program by Lockheed Martin Corp.
