We would like you to be aware of the most recent blog that Bill Sweetman has posted on the homepage of Aviation Week.

As our competitor mentioned in this piece has recently gone public with statements regarding air-to-air combat, there are some points we would like to make:

1. Eurofighter Typhoon's passive and active sensor systems are fully internally integrated and provide a 360 degree of situational awareness. Eurofighter Typhoon can detect LO aircraft like the mentioned competitor.

2. Eurofighter Typhoon has a superior performance over this competing aircraft: It is faster, can supercruise, is more agile and has more firepower.

3. We think, a small one type air force equipped with this competiting excellent fighter bomber will not be able to survive in air combat.

4. And we think it is fair to say, the cost for the competing aircraft seem to be much higher than expected and higher of any other competitor.

So as Eurofighter Typhoon offers superior operational capabilities and unmatched firepower at much lower costs, why should a nation spend money on anything less?

F-35 factory: One aircraft per day by 2016

FORT WORTH, Texas — Inside a manufacturing facility so large that workers routinely bike and ride golf carts down paths named after fighter jets, preparations are underway to begin mass production of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

Lockheed Martin Corp. plans to assemble the stealth plane here on a moving assembly line using digital processes and automation techniques that are new to the defense aerospace sector, says Steve O’Bryan of Lockheed Martin’s F-35 business development team.

Though car manufacturers have built millions of vehicles on automated assembly lines, the concept of moving lines has not been applied to military aircraft since World War II.

Modern warplanes typically have been built in small quantities over the course of many years. The Navy’s F/A-18, which has been in production for more than 20 years, is being built at a rate of 42 aircraft per year. But the F-35 Lightning II is expected to be built at an unprecedented rate — as many as 230 fighters per year.

Lockheed has embraced the moving assembly line concept as the linchpin to produce the next-generation fighter in large enough quantities to satisfy U.S. and international sales.

The U.S. military is buying about 2,500 aircraft. Allied nations are purchasing an additional 500 or so. Lockheed Martin officials are expecting foreign military sales to hike the total number to more than 4,000 Joint Strike Fighters.

Avec un tel chiffre, Cela m'etonnerai pas qu'il y ait des conflits avec des F35 utilisés par les deux belligérants.

Quel avenir pour le F-35 ? Aux Pays-Bas ça paraît plutôt sombre. Bien sûr la participation du pays n'est que réduite dans le coût global du projet, mais il est à se demander dans quelle mesure cela ne pourrait pas influencer les autres partenaires de faible envergure ou de potentiels clients. Poll: Coalition Voters Do Not Like JSF

A large majority (65 percent) of the voters of the government coalition parties CDA, PvdA and Christen Unie are against the proposed purchase of two JSF test aircraft. This is what research of EenVandaag has shown. Among PvdA voters, at least 81 percent is against the plans. More than half (53 percent) of the CDA constituency does not like the purchase of the JSF.

--Party members

The research was held among 21,000 viewers of the EenVandaag Opinion panel, amongst them 800 party members of the PvdA, 800 party members of the CDA and 200 of the Christen Unie.

Among the PvdA members the resistance is the largest: 83 percent is against the purchase of the planes. Among Christen Unie members 55 percent is against, among CDA members this is 40 percent. A minority of the CDA members (38 percent) is in favor of the purchase of the planes.

--Regional protest

In the broadcasting of EenVandaag regional departments will announce tonight that they want to submit motions at the PvdA congress this week to block the purchase of the test planes. Some complain about the lack of information from the government.

“In this way the party cannot take a proper look at the alternatives”, says Piet Boekhoudt, ‘Red Baron’ and chairman of the PvdA in Groningen. “Anyway, these test planes should not be purchased”.

--Flying on with F-16s

What should happen if the JSF planes are not purchased? Almost half of the PvdA members want to continue flying with revamped F-16s. Of the entire coalition constituency, a plurality (37 percent) is in favor of flying on, 22 percent is in favor of purchase the other competitor, the Saab Gripen, and almost 1/5th wants to move the decision about the succession of the F-16 to the next governmental period.

Parliament has to take a decision about the purchase of JSF test planes in April.

**A large majority of opposition voters are also opposed to the purchase of the JSF test planes:

--VVD: 55%

--PVV: 51%

--GroenLinks: 85%

--SP: 86%

--D66: 83%

**A large majority (65 percent) of the voters of the coalition parties CDA, PvdA and Christen Unie are against the proposed purchase of the JSF test planes. Below the parties are split up:

--PvdA: 81%

--CDA: 53%

--Christen Unie: 60%

**Within the PvdA the opposition is the largest. Of the PvdA voters, 81 percent are against the purchase, of the PvdA members in the panel even 83%:

-- PvdA voters: 81%

-- PvdA members: 83%

**What should happen if the JSF planes are not purchased? Almost half of the PvdA voters want to continue flying with revamped F-16s:

--Continue flying with F-16: 48%

--Postpone: 23%

--Purchase Saab Gripen: 19%

Les anglais commandent leur 3 premier F35B

The UK has kept its commitment to the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter programme despite massive pressure on its procurement budget, today signing for its first three production aircraft to support initial operational test and evaluation (IOT&E) of the fifth-generation fighter.

Signed during a visit to Washington DC by defence secretary John Hutton, the deal will see the UK take delivery of its first short take-off and vertical landing F-35Bs in 2011, with the aircraft to be drawn from the JSF programme's third low-rate initial production batch

To be delivered in 2011-12, the UK aircraft will be assigned to a joint test team for the F-35 in the USA, with the Netherlands also expected to acquire two conventional take-off and landing F-35As to support IOT&E activities.

Describing the JSF as "an essential part of our Future Combat Air Capability", Hutton says: "Working alongside their US colleagues, our pilots will gain an unrivalled understanding of this awesome aircraft and its capabilities."

As the USA's lone Level 1 partner to the JSF programme, the UK expects to spend £2 billion ($2.79 billion) during the design's ongoing system development and demonstration phase. More than £1.1 billion of this total had been spent by 31 March 2008, according to the UK National Audit Office's Major Projects 2008 report.

The MoD declines to reveal the value of its 18 March contract, citing "commercial sensitivity", but confirms that the sum is in addition to its previously identified £2 billion investment in the programme.

To be acquired under its Joint Combat Aircraft project, the UK's future F-35Bs will replace its current BAE Systems Harrier GR7/9s, operated by the Royal Air Force/Royal Navy Joint Force Harrier organisation. Up to 138 of the aircraft are expected to be purchased.

Up to 32 of the aircraft will be deployed aboard each of the RN's two 65,000t Future Aircraft Carrier vessels, and today's IOT&E acquisition "will enable the MoD to move forward in developing the Carrier Strike capability", Hutton says.

Le E pour ça part serait un bombardier à la sauce FB-22 like.

Faut que je me mette à 3Dsmax pour en faire sur le Rafale. Attendez de voir la version F6+ avec réacteurs à poussée vectorielle M-018 (ben oui, 2018) de 150kn de poussée unitaire, radar Aesa hémisphérique, soutes d'emport Meteor block IX, spectra conformal, gouvernes élastiques et ionisation plasmique.

Putain ça va chier. Le super J-10 n'a qu'à bien se tenir.

PARIS --- Pricing of the Joint Strike Fighter has always seemed to be firmly rooted in fantasy, and the outgoing head of the JSF Program Office has again demonstrated just how divorced this program is from reality.

The “official” unit price quoted by Lockheed Martin for the JSF remains pegged at about $65 million, although even Lockheed recently admitted that it won’t know the exact price until 2012.

JSF Program Office (JPO) director Major General Charles Davis now tells Jane’s Defence Review that the US and F-35 partner countries “could save as much as USD 13 billion” by buying “about 150 extra aircraft between 2010 and 2015,” he says.

Davis’ figures mean that each of the 150 extra aircraft he’s offering would save $86.6 million, far more than the $65 million that the JSF is supposed to cost.

Does this mean a cash rebate of $21.6 million for each additional JSF bought?

If so, it would explain why Norway, the Netherlands and the UK remain enthusiastic JSF backers, despite all the contrary evidence that has emerged in recent years regarding the program’s viability.

By the way, in its latest JSF report GAO calculated that buying an additional 169 aircraft between FY2010 and 2015 would cost “up to $33.4 billion in additional procurement funding,” although they are the same extra aircraft that Davis sees as the source of $13 billion savings.

Simple arithmetic shows that each of these 169 additional aircraft would cost $197.6 million each.

So, in a nutshell, Davis says that each extra aircraft would save $86.6 million, but GAO says they would cost $197.6 million each, but Lockheed says unit cost is $65 million.

Now that Madoff funds are no longer available, here’s an idea for a great investment: buy JSF aircraft at Lockheed’s price, pocket the cash rebate from the JPO, and sell the aircraft on to the Pentagon at the GAO price:

$197.6M - $65M = $132.6M + $21.6M cash rebate = $154.2M net profit per aircraft.

Don’t have any spare cash? Then forget the aircraft, just buy JSF options, and settle for the $21.6 million cash rebate. For a 12-aircraft squadron, net profit is $259.63 million.

If you’re Norway, you could run a profit of $1,036.8 million (that’s $1.03 billion) on 48 aircraft. And Dassault might even pay you to take near-new Mirage 2000 Mk 9s off the U.A.E.’s hands so they can buy Rafales.

So the JSF finally starts to make financial sense – just as long as you don’t buy any.

Cà veut dire que l'un des deux volets du dossier F 35 commence à vraiment apparaître au grand jour:

Le premier volet, classique, c'est celui relatif à la production d'un nouvel avion de combat jusque là RAS

Mais le second est bcp plus polémique. C'est la mise en évidence de la stratégie US de destruction de l'appareil aéronautique européen au travers du programme de coopération F35. Et là on est en plein dedans.

-Des budgets de recherche consacrés depuis des années à un programme financièrement non contrôlé

-Un partage industriel rendu encore plus flou par les dérapages financier et l'éventuel diktat industriel US (rapatriement de la production de certains sous ensembles)

-Caractéristiques techniques des avions clients (je pense à la furtivité notamment) qui ne sont pas figées

-Coût final du programme inconnu (c'est inquiétant quand on en commande que 48... avec un "petit" budget)

Bref aujourd'hui les stratèges industriels US en sont arrivés là où ils voulaient: les partenaires du programme ne peuvent plus reculer ils sont allés trop loin et ne peuvent plus renoncer à la merveille ayant engagé trop de financements et surtout ayant gagé leur stratégie industrielle à venir sur un programme de coopération et de production qui risque de devenir de moins en moins juteux.

Le seul bémol c'est que l'avion semble aussi de plus en plus coûteux à une administration US en proie elle aussi à la crise et à l'explosion des couts d'OPEX...

Et çà c'était pas trop prévu il y a dix ans

ou alors le journaliste n'a rien compris (ce ne serait pas une première) et il fallait comprendre la déclaration de la manière suivante :

Si on achète 150 avions de plus (et que la production passe de 3100 à 3250 avions), on épargne un total de 13 milliards de dollars sur le coût d'achat de la flotte.  13000m$ / 3250 = 4 millions$ de moins par avion. Ce qui n'est plus un chiffre venant de la planète Mars.

Plus il y aura d'avions produits moins ils seront chers à l'unité. Le pb pour les clients compte tenu des différentes versions et des différents équipements c'est de savoir combien ils devront en acheter pour que çà leur revienne vraiment moins cher à l'unité.

Bref si par exemple les norvégiens danois et hollandais doivent acheter à eux trois 50 avions de plus pour économiser 4 milions de dollars par avion auront ils le budget nécessaire ?

Encore une fois ce sont les gros budget qui feront les vraies économies d'échelle (comme à la bourse avec les gains) et là il n'y en a qu'un c'est le budget US pour le reste des clients c'est "les baisés comptez vous"...
